A Day in The Life of Mrs. Flathers

By Joellynn Dwinal

Teaching is a tough profession. A day in the life of a teacher can be long and frustrating, but can sometimes be worthwhile. It always differs with each teacher you talk to.  Mrs. Flathers starts her days early, being at school without missing many days.  Mrs. Flathers spends around 9 hours a day at school but still manages to find time for her hobbies.

Here Comes The Sun!

Mrs. Flathers starts her days very early, waking up at 5 am when her alarm goes off.  She hops in the shower to make sure she's clean for the day.  After her early morning shower, Mrs. Flathers chooses her outfit for the day and gets dressed. During her interview, Mrs. Flathers stated that after she gets dressed she “Listens to her cat protest because she hasn't fed her yet,” so to get her cat to calm down she goes and feeds her. After Mrs. Flathers is done feeding her cat, she makes herself breakfast.

While her breakfast is cooking, she packs her lunch for school. Sometimes, if she is making dinner that night in a crockpot she gets the food ready so it can cook while she is at school. Once she is done preparing lunch and dinner, she eats her first meal of the day. Then, she checks her email and makes sure there's nothing important, then she finishes getting ready and leaves for school.

Preparing For The Day

For teachers, morning prep is crucial. They have to make sure everything is ready for their classes and that everything for the day is organized. Mrs. Flathers starts her day by getting to school sometime around 7 am. She gets to school early to make sure she has time to organize everything for the day.

Mrs. Flathers stated that the first thing she does when she gets to school is “Read a couple of devotional books,” “They're just short 1-page things to calm down and relax.” According to teachforamerica.org, it is very important for teachers to take time to themselves before classes and relax so that they can avoid getting teacher burnout. Mrs. Flathers is doing just that!

After reading her devotional books, Mrs. Flathers mentally goes through what she's doing for each lesson that day. She has to make sure that she knows what she is going to teach before actually teaching it. Afterward, she said that she double-checks to make sure everything looks okay on Canvas, sometimes things get messed up. She makes sure that everything looks correct for her and her students' Canvas page.

If Mrs. Flathers has some extra time before her classes start she will get started on grading papers. Don't want to get behind!

Inspiring Excellence Every Day

Teachers spend long exhausting days teaching students. They work extremely hard to make sure their students are provided with everything that they need. Even if that means staying after school way too long.

Mrs. Flathers starts with first-hour prep on both day 1 and day 2. She said that she wishes she had some more variety but it's okay and she can deal. She uses her time to grade her students' assignments. She has three classes a day after first-hour prep plus lunch and quest.

She usually has two regular classes and one honors class every day.  I asked Mrs. Flathers which class she preferred more and she said that she prefers honors class, “because it's smaller and easier to get everybody involved.” It's easier for her to work with smaller groups because the bigger classes in high school are hard to get under control.

Heading Home

After leaving around 4, Mrs. Flathers spends extra time after school finishing up some of her extra work. After she is done working on the rest of her schoolwork, Mrs. Flathers may run a few errands before she goes home. She only goes to run errands if she needs to get something before she goes home. Once she reaches her house she goes to her mailbox and checks the mail.

Once she gets home she starts to fix supper for her and herself and her husband. Her husband gets home between 4:30 pm and 5 pm every day, making time to eat supper around 6 pm. After Mrs. and Mr. Flathers are done eating their dinner, Mrs. Flathers will start to wash the dishes that she used to make their meal.

After the dishes are done Mrs. Flathers starts to do some crafts. The other day, she had a fun card-making class. She may also be sewing something for fun, or she may just be reading. It is important to wind down after a long day of teaching loud high-school kids. It is also nice to get relaxed before bed so you can get a good night's sleep. Finally, when she is done with everything for the day, Mrs. and Mr. Flathers go to bed around 9 pm every night.
