Students become antsy as summer approaches. They can’t wait to be free of school and the stress it may bring. Here’s what the students and teachers of Central DeWitt High School said about their summer festivities.
Mr. Law, a business teacher, thought he had more to do during break. He said, “I’m probably busier in the summer than I am in a lot of the school year.” When asked what he's looking forward to this summer, he stated, “I like to hunt, fish, and camp.” When asked to answer his dream weekend, he responded with, “I would go out to the Corville Res, there’s a campground out there that I spend a lot of time at.” He also mentioned, “Or I drive up to South Dakota, my parents have a campground on the lake.”
Mr. Law mentioned that he spends a great amount of time with his kids and is involved in sports. “I’ve got kids and when you’re a parent, your kids become a big part of your hobbies. So my hobbies include going to my kid’s baseball and softball tournaments,” he said, “I’m a big sports guy, so I also help coach them.”
One student was looking forward to sleeping in and spending time at the Mississippi Valley Fair. She said she enjoys the music and having fun with her friends. She also stated she would miss socializing with friends at school during break.
Another student mentioned they would rather work and spend time in the pleasant weather. When asked what he was looking forward to this summer break, he said, “I get to make money,” He also stated, “massive camping trip, jet skis, and dirt bikes,” when asked what his dream weekend would be.
One of the math teachers, Mr. LaPage, said, “I go fishing,” When he was asked what he does during the summer. In addition, he talked about the spots he normally goes to. Mr. LaPage mentioned he got permission from farmers to fish on their land where he caught his biggest fish.
Mr. LaPage also mentioned that he likes to travel. He mostly drives around Iowa and visits landmarks. He drives to Guttenburg, which is about a 3 hour drive from Dewitt, or he goes to Dubuque for a convention. Most of his summers were spent driving to national parks, like Glacier National Park and Yellowstone with his parents.
When asked what he does on a normal day during break, a student responded with: “Nothing much. Hang out with friends, work, and sleep,” He also said “I just stay home because I have to take care of my dogs,” when asked if he left Iowa.
The majority of students said they stay close to home during summer break. One student said that some of their family comes to visit, but they don’t go on vacations. Another student said they just stay in their room over break.
Both teachers’ and students’ hobbies consisted of an assortment of different activities, such as fishing, camping, attending the fair, playing video games, and seeing friends and family.
