Girls wrestling is a newer sport that continues to grow in popularity daily. In 1987, women had the opportunity to compete in the first women's world championships. This may surprise you because girls' wrestling is fairly new in schools. In 46 states, women's wrestling is coming into high schools, with more than 50,000 girls joining the sport.
Central DeWitt Girls Wrestling is one of our newest sports, and the head coach is Adam Grell. He always encourages girls to try it out, even just watching practice, because it is a great environment! Adam always tells the girls, “If we put in the work and effort, we can and will have one of the best teams in Iowa for girl’s wrestling.”
The student body also has positive comments about girls wrestling. There were lots of answers talking about how independence is something you can learn from the sport, and how it teaches you things not just now but down the road as well.
Madison Poll, a current wrestler says, “I think this a good sport that challenges anyone who does it. I love this sport and it all depends on how hard you work.”
An anonymous student said, “I think it's awesome that we are providing more opportunities for girls to be athletic and grow in the way that only sports can help you grow.”
Evalyn House wonders why “More girls don’t ask about girls wrestling because it is a very interesting sport. Without asking questions, you can’t know about it.”
Another anonymous student said, “I think it's awesome. Girls should be able to do whatever sports guys can do. No matter what.”
If you are thinking about going out for the sport, you should try out wrestling or at least try coming to watch a practice if you are interested. This is a sport where the environment is so positive, with there being so many lessons you can learn outside of just the sport itself. There are many ways people can look at girls wrestling, but after reading this article I hope this sheds new light on your perspective or expands your thoughts on the sport.
