Joann's Fabric Closing

By Lena Perrone

Fabric and crafts retailer Joann Inc., which has been a destination for generations of quilters, knitters and lovers of craft projects for over 80 years, is going out of business and shuttering all its stores,” states KCCI News. Joann’s is forecasted to close about 500 stores, which is more than half. They operate almost 850 stores nationwide. You might be asking yourself, “Why”?

The Joann website gives details about what the store offers, saying, “Your one-stop shop for sewing, knitting, crocheting, crafting & decorating your home for every season!” An interviewed classmate who utilizes Joann’s supplies is sad about them closing, but was thrilled when she saw they were having a sale. She goes to Joann’s because they have good supplies and have what she needs. Embroidery thread is her main reason for purchasing supplies at Joann’s.

According to USA Today, “After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time within a year, Joann's remaining assets were put up for auction.” Joann’s has started their going-out-of-business sales. “According to Joann’s restructuring website, the retailer said it is not accepting gift cards. Discounts for Girl Scouts, teachers, military, and healthcare are also paused. The company also said item returns are not being accepted at the closing locations.”

So, how do consumers feel about this debacle? Good Housekeeping says,  “Less access to inexpensive but quality supplies means less creativity, which is a loss for everyone.” Another quote about the opinion of Joann’s closing is, “Some people are definitely devastated by the news of Joann Fabrics closing down, but this feels like a niche concern.”

With all this information, Joann’s closing will make a huge impact on some people's lives, but others may not be affected at all.
