New Staff Profiles: Mr. LaPage

By Laura Martens

Mr. LaPage, who previously taught middle school math in Waukon, Iowa has joined our high school staff this year. He teaches various math classes.

Q: What is your favorite hobby to do outside of school?

A: “I have so many! I like to hunt and fish, I dress up and do cosplay, and go to comic book conventions; I build legos and play video games.” “Between my wife and I, I have all the hobbies.”

Q: What kind of hobbies do you and your wife do together?

A: “The comic book conventions.” “She was a nerd before we met, but I brought more of the nerd out of her.” “We have some team cosplay things that we do.”

Q: What made you want to join our school district?

A: “I was teaching middle school for the last 4 years and I was having an awful time and so I just started looking for jobs and this came open and I applied because I’m originally from Dubuque. So, I was really interested in getting a little closer to Dubuque. And I really really liked it, seemed like a really nice place to work.”

Q: What are your goals for the school year?

A: “I just want my students to be successful and their own version of success is what it is for themselves.”

Q: What does a typical day look like for you after school?

A: “I go home, I let my puppy out and take him outside and then play with him for like an hour and a half and hope that he falls asleep so that I can do chores around the house like make dinner and clean things up until my wife gets home. I haven’t had much time for video games because of my puppy, so right now that’s basically it.”

Q: What is something that you want your students to know about you?

A: “I’m like a bear in hibernation.” “As long as you stay on my good side, there’s no problems but once you get on my bad side then there’s a lot of problems. It’s hard to get on my bad side.”

Q: What are 3 words to describe your high school self?

A: “Nerd, but that’s not a bad thing, I like being a nerd.” “Outgoing, theatrical,” “and friendly.” “My friend John who lives in Kentucky that I go to the conventions down there all the time (with), says that he has never met a person I couldn’t have a conversation with.”
