October Recommendations: Books

By Emily Sons

Starting off with the Realm Breaker series by Victoria Aveyard. It follows teenager Corayne an-Amarat, and several companions along the way. Corayne is the daughter of an infamous pirate who teams up with a squire, an immortal, an assassin, an ancient sorceress, a forger, and a bounty hunter. The book flips through multiple character POVs but still goes along the problem in the story, that the realm they all live in is slowly falling into chaos and each of them has to play their part in saving it. This adventure-packed tale has no shortage of relationships between characters, whether platonic or romantic, making it a good read for anyone who loves well-written characters.

Powerless is a book all about fate. Paedyn is a girl who lives in the slums, taught to survive by her father. She poses as a psychic in Ilya, a city full of Elites. Elites are powerful, extraordinary people whose ancestors survived The Plague, rewarding them with powers that the “Ordinary” don’t have. Paedyn unknowingly saves one said Elite, a prince of Ilya. She’s suddenly thrust into a world of eventual romance and brutal competition where if the esteemed Elites don’t kill her, the prince she saved will if he figures out who she truly is. If you’re looking for a slow burn that still has something other than just romance, Powerless is a great choice.

Greenglass House is a story filled with mystery. Set in an old, creaky little inn, Milo plans to relax and have a nice vacation. He’s the innkeeper's adopted son and just got out on holiday. However, as more mysterious guests fill the rooms, Milo and Meddy, the cook’s daughter, find themselves piecing together each clue as to the truth about the house. Not only that, Milo must figure out who he is, despite being adopted, and who he can choose to be.  Greenglass House is overall an engaging, puzzling tale with enigmatic characters, as well as some illustrations sprinkled throughout the pages.

No Longer Human is a title that is also known as A Shameful Life. It’s a novel originally written in Japanese, and later translated into English. If you are sensitive to certain topics like drugs, suicide, etc, you shouldn’t read it. No Longer Human is a compelling story about a man who hides his true self from others, before turning to alcoholism and drug abuse and disappearing. It is considered a Japanese postwar classic, and Dazai’s magnum opus. The book is a heartwrenching, well-written portrayal of the author's life, and was published not long after his suicide. It is a difficult read, but worth it in the end if you can get through it.

A Brave New World is a dystopian novel that's set in the future. Originally written in 1931, the technology still is futuristic to us, but that’s not the point of the book. Brave New World is a warning of how technology may consume us in the future, and to be careful. This book is considered a classic, easily making it into the top 100s on many lists. With reproductive technology, sleep-learning, classical conditioning, and even psychological manipulation, the protagonist, Bernard Marx, has a lot to deal with. Not to mention Soma, which is a drug that's created to cure any unhappiness inside society. It’s a novel that is becoming more and more accurate as time goes on and is interesting if you’re looking for a book that doesn’t just praise scientific advancement.

Firekeeper’s Daughter is a thriller that hooks you from the very beginning. Daunis Fontaine is a Native American girl who, after her best friend is murdered, joins the investigation undercover. She has big dreams of studying medicine but puts it on hold to help her mother as the family undergoes a tragedy. Her brother, Levi, is on a hockey team, and Daunis starts to fall for the new recruit, Jamie. As time goes on, she notices some things are off and figures Jamie is hiding something. Something big. So, despite her reluctance, for her best friend, she will figure out who killed her. This story is a great mystery, and you get to know Daunis and those around her. The dynamics between each of the characters are nothing short of amazing as well. If you’re interested, we have this book in our own media center!

The Inheritance Games is a realistic fiction story with a bit of mystery. Avery is a girl with a simple plan: to survive high school and get a scholarship. Then, she’s out. However, a man named Tobias Hawthorne has different plans for her. It should be noted that Avery has no clue who this guy is, and even worse, his four grandsons want the inheritance too. One of them, Grayson Hawthorne, is determined to take her down as he’s convinced she's a con woman. Grayson is the polar opposite of his brother, Jameson. Now she’s destined to lose it all or survive, either way as a billionaire. Avery has a lot in store, including a short-lived love triangle.
