Trump's New Policies: What Do Students Think?

By Emily Sons

Policies enacted by the president of the United States affect everyone, and it’s important to know what they decide to do with their new power. The information in this article comes directly from the White House site.

One priority that was focused on and made a point in the website was about gender ideology. A controversial topic nowadays is transgender people and whether or not they should be allowed to play in sports.

For example, if a transgender woman wants to play in a sport, she could have a biological advantage since she’d naturally have more testosterone. One anonymous student who picked Trump over Kamala comments that he supports Trump’s move to get rid of this, “I really like that. I think it’s good,” and agrees with Trump wanting to stop “radical gender ideology,” and protect women from it.

Another policy brought up by Trump more recently is his movement to dismantle the Department of Education. There isn’t much known about it yet, as decisions are still being made, however, the same student previously mentioned says “When I think about people making decisions, I think of ‘how much do they stand to gain, how much do they stand to lose?’ and he loses everything from this,” saying he doesn’t agree with Trump’s choice on this.

Moving onto Trump’s decision to leave the World Health Organization, an agency that works to connect nations, partners, and communities to promote health, another anonymous student who sided with Kamala said that she feels, “There’s no point,” while the student who preferred Trump said he doesn’t care. Trump had reportedly left because he believes they not only,  “mishandled the COVID-19 pandemic,” but also feel unfairly treated because, “China, with a population of 1.4 billion, has 300 percent of the population of the United States, yet contributes nearly 90 percent less to the WHO.” (Source)

The Kamala-supporting student also commented that she, “supports Kamala with her aid to Ukraine,” when asked if she thought we should continue funding them. Trump famously halted the United States’ financial support to Ukraine, after America reportedly gave them over $180 billion for assistance.

Overall, political standpoints aren’t all black and white, as we see here. There are policies that Trump supporters don’t agree with, and others that Kamala supporters do.
